About this test

The desk is where most people spend the longest stretch of the day, and one of the few spaces they can actually change. It has little to do with residential feng shui — no stove, no bed head. Only three things matter: which way you face, whether there is backing behind you, and what is in front of your eyes.

This tool judges the facing with the eight-mansion Kua, suggests a direction from the four auspicious ones in the order Sheng Qi, Yan Nian, Tian Yi, Fu Wei, and derives the favoured side for desk items from the Day Master's useful element. The desk type (private office, open plan, by the window, facing the door, aisle behind) is used to flag what is worth fixing before the facing.

If you can only change one thing, deal with an aisle behind you or a desk facing the door. A screen or a filing cabinet behind you usually improves how the desk feels more than turning the chair 45 degrees.

My desk is fixed. Is this still useful?

Yes. Facing, desk layout, monitor angle and screens are all things you can move. Building structure cannot move, and structure is not part of this reading anyway.

Is an open-plan desk always bad?

No. The real problems are interruption and having nothing behind you, and both can be softened with a screen, headphones or a plant. The desk type is listed separately for exactly this reason.

Are the facing and the favoured side the same thing?

No. The facing comes from your Kua (fixed for life); the favoured side comes from the Day Master's useful element (which depends on the chart). Different conventions answering different questions.
